#9 – Backup QB Battle

This is the only position battle on this list that is for a backup spot. It’s also arguably the most important backup position on Big Blue’s roster.

New York’s decision to pass on a quarterback at No. 2 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft made it clear Manning is here to stay. The 37-year-old is likely to be the franchise quarterback for at least another two seasons, but the competition to become his eventual successor surely got more interesting this offseason.

Big Blue’s selection of Kyle Lauletta in the fourth-round of the 2018 draft took many by surprise. The Giants already had Davis Webb on the roster, a third-round pick in 2017.

Both players won the Senior Bowl’s Most Outstanding Player Award ahead of their respective drafts. Webb may have the inside track to be the team’s No. 2 quarterback due to experience, but it can’t be forgotten that Shurmur and Gettleman hand-picked Lauletta.

Both quarterbacks have the talent to become starters eventually. Both are expected to beat out backup journeyman Alex Tanney for roster spots. But who will be the team’s No. 2 in 2018 may come down to preseason play.

The Giants are clearly taking a risk in having two backups with no regular season experience on the roster. They also can’t afford to give up a roster spot to another quarterback or risk losing either player.

It will be interesting to see who wins the backup role ahead of the regular season. Then again, this position battle may be going on for a few years before it’s truly decided.
