New York Giants: 9 notable position battles worth watching
By Henry Buggy
#7 – No. 3 & No. 4 Wide Receivers
New York’s receiving corps was decimated by injuries in 2017. The Giants lost Beckham, Brandon Marshall, and Dwayne Harris to season-ending injuries. Sterling Shepard was also limited to 11 games.
The injuries required Tavarres King, Roger Lewis, and Travis Rudolph to step into the starting lineup at times. The unit struggled as a whole throughout the season, posting the league’s most dropped passes.
The Giants are looking to correct those errors in 2018. Having a healthy Beckham and Shepard will undoubtedly help.
But if the Giants learned anything from last season, it’s the importance of depth. New York’s third and fourth receivers will have a vital role in the offense. Those receivers will also be next in line to step up should anything happen to Beckham or Shepard.
Cody Latimer is likely the favorite to land New York’s No. 3 receiver role. Gettleman signed the 6-foot-2, 215-pound receiver to a one-year, $2.5 million contract this offseason, according to Spotrac.
The Giants are in need of another red zone target after moving on from Marshall. Latimer is likely the best option to fill that role.
Lewis and Hunter Sharp will also be vying for a top spot on New York’s wide receiver depth chart. Lewis made the most of his opportunities last season, recording 36 catches for 416 yards.
Sharp joined the team late last season but found an instant connection with Manning. He helped the Giants get their only division win in the team’s regular season finale. In his lone start, Sharp caught three passes for 29 yards and scored a touchdown.
The Giants also just added veteran receiver Russell Shepard to the mix this past week.
New York’s No. 3 and No. 4 receiver roles will likely be up for grabs through the preseason. The competition for those spots will be one of the most fun to watch.
