The Giants are looking to reestablish their once-dominant pass rush. Vernon is primed for success in Bettcher’s defense, but who will start opposite the former second-team All-Pro in 2018?

Big Blue has two talented options to start at outside linebacker. The position battle between Kareem Martin and Lorenzo Carter may be the most exciting to watch ahead of the regular season.

Gettleman signed Martin to a three-year, $15 million contract in free agency, according to Spotrac. He also used the No. 66 overall pick in the 2018 draft on Carter.

Both players are expected to make an immediate impact and will be vying for the starting role opposite Vernon.

Martin likely has the inside track due to his experience in Bettcher’s defense. He spent his first four seasons in the league under Big Blue’s new defensive coordinator and logged a career-high 10 starts last season.

But that doesn’t mean Carter doesn’t have a chance. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound linebacker is an ideal fit for Bettcher’s defense. He recorded 8.5 tackles for a loss, 4.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles while helping Georgia reach the National Championship game in his senior season.

Both players are expected to have significant roles. Avery Moss and Romeo Okwara will also be in the mix at outside linebacker.
