#5 – OLB Lorenzo Carter

Narrowing this list down to five players is not easy. Kareem Martin, William Gay, Patrick Omameh, Josh Mauro, and B.J. Hill could all be worthy of this spot. All five have a chance to earn a starting role with the G-Men this upcoming season. Each is expected to play a vital role in Big Blue’s turnaround.

But Lorenzo Carter has the potential to be something special in Bettcher’s defense. The former five-star high school prospect didn’t live up to high expectations at Georgia but was still considered a steal in the third-round of the 2018 draft.

Gettleman contemplated trading up for the Bulldogs pass rusher. He was clearly happy when Carter fell to the G-Men at No. 66 overall, via New York’s team website.

"“We tried and thank God we didn’t have to.”"

Carter may not earn the starting role opposite Olivier Vernon at the outset of the 2018 season. Martin’s experience in Bettcher’s defense gives him the advantage.

But don’t count Carter out from making a significant impact in his rookie season. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound outside linebacker ranked fifth among this year’s class of edge defenders in term’s of pass rushing productivity in 2017, according to Pro Football Focus.

While Carter didn’t put up jaw-dropping numbers in the SEC, Giants head coach Pat Shurmur saw enough on tape to know that he is a dynamic pass rusher.

"“He was involved on a team that got a lot of pressure. Although he didn’t get sacks, there was a time where he did get pressure. There are some really dynamic rushes that he put on the quarterback where he was able to step up, move around and do something. He has got it in him.”"

The Giants have some depth at outside linebacker. Carter, Martin, Vernon, Avery Moss and Romeo Okwara will all likely rotate in Bettcher’s defense. Vernon is undoubtedly New York’s top pass rushing option, but don’t be surprised if Carter has a breakout rookie campaign.
