#4 – ILB Alec Ogletree

The New York Giants addressed a significant need in their defense before free agency even started. Big Blue’s front office came to terms on a trade with the Los Angeles Rams for Ogletree back in early March. The Giants officially acquired the former second-team All-Pro linebacker at the start of the new league year.

The acquisition marked a change in philosophy for the franchise. Under former general manager Jerry Reese, the Giants often neglected their linebacking corps. That’s clearly no longer the case under Gettleman.

The Giants are expecting big things from Ogletree in his first season. The 26-year-old has experience lining up in both a 3-4 and 4-3 defense. He is expected to be a leader on the defensive side of the ball along with Landon Collins, Damon Harrison, and Vernon.

Bettcher knows exactly what Ogletree can bring to a defense. The two spent the past five seasons in the NFC West.

Ogletree has shown the ability to adapt to different defensive schemes. He also understands the importance of communication at all levels of the defense, via New York’s team website.

"“There is communication going all over the place. Like I said, each coordinator is kind of different in the sense of how they want stuff to be communicated. But, you’re definitely talking to the other linebacker and the outside linebacker and also the safeties and you’re talking to the D-line. Like I said, there is a communication going all across the board and that’s how you have to play.”"

Ogletree will not only be a vocal leader for the Giants. He will lead Big Blue with his play on the field. His ability to drop in coverage, rush the passer, and stop the run makes him a valuable asset in Bettcher’s defense.

He already showcased his playmaking skills with the Rams. He will now look to join a long list of linebacker greats in the Big Apple.
