New York Giants: 5 worst injuries in team history
By Curt Macysyn
#5 – Frank Gifford
Realistically, Odell Beckham is the Frank Gifford of this generation. Back in the 1950s and 1960s, Gifford was the all everything for some very good New York Giants teams. According to Pro Football Reference, Gifford was an eight-time Pro Bowl participant, as well as a four-time NFL All-Pro player. And he was league Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 1956, the year he won his only championship.
Everything changed for Gifford on Nov. 20, 1960, when the Giants (5-1-1) took on the Philadelphia Eagles (6-1). Eagles linebacker Chuck Bednarik leveled Gifford after catching a pass from quarterback George Shaw. Gifford was knocked unconscious by arguably the most devastating hit in NFL history. The Giants lost that contest 17-10 and then again 31-23 to the Eagles the very next week. Big Blue went from championship tinder to also-ran status quickly – limping to 6-4-2 record. Gifford missed the rest of that 1960 campaign, as well as the entire 1961 season. When he returned in 1962, the star running back changed position to wide receiver. While the Giants did return to the championship game, both Gifford and the team were never the same.
