Top 4 takeaways from New York Giants preseason opener

Davis Webb Struggles
All eyes were on Davis Webb entering Thursday’s preseason game, and he struggled under the spotlight.
The 2017 third-round pick out of Cal completed just 9-of-22 passes for 70 yards. He started the night with six consecutive incompletions before completing two check-down passes to running back Wayne Gallman for 27 yards.
It was definitely a disappointment for the second-year quarterback, who had been playing well against Big Blue’s defense in training camp. His passes were off target, while Mayfield continued to have his way with New York’s second-team defense.
Giants rookie quarterback Kyle Lauletta arguably had the best game of the night for Big Blue’s quarterbacks. He completed 6-of-9 passes for 48 yards with the third- and fourth-string offense. He also posted the best passer rating (79.9) of New York’s quarterbacks.
Webb still has plenty of time to turn it around this preseason. But he will need to show improvement against the Detroit Lions next week, or Lauletta might start earning some second-team reps.
