5 New York Giants making the most of their preseason snaps
By Henry Buggy
The New York Giants are 1-1 under new head coach Pat Shurmur this preseason.
The G-Men won’t carry their record into the regular season, but the team’s improvement from one week to next has many New York Giants fans excited.
New York’s pass defense, special teams, and offensive line have all made improvements through two preseason outings. Olivier Vernon, Will Hernandez, Landon Collins, and other starters have all showcased their importance to Big Blue in limited snaps.
But there are plenty of other New York Giants who have also made the most of their preseason snaps coming off the bench. Players that are looking to solidify their role within the offense or defense and players who may just be looking to make the final 53-man roster.
Here’s a look at the top five New York Giants who have taken advantage of the opportunities given this preseason:
No. 5 – Leonard Johnson
There are multiple players that could take this spot. Robert Martin, Mark Herzlich, and Andrew Adams have all made the most of their snaps this preseason, but Leonard Johnson takes the No. 5 spot due to Big Blue’s issues at cornerback.
The Giants signed the seven-year veteran after the start of training camp, and he is quickly making an impact in New York’s secondary. Through two outings, Johnson has recorded three passes defended and five tackles.
The 5-foot-10, 194-pound corner made a great tackle on third-and-goal from the one-yard line in the fourth quarter against the Lions. Unfortunately, Detroit punched it in for a touchdown on the following play, but that doesn’t diminish the stop Johnson made on third-and-goal.
The Giants are looking for reliable options at cornerback behind Janoris Jenkins and Eli Apple, and Johnson is making a great case to be one of those players.
