New York Giants: Narrowing down options at No. 6
By Curt Macysyn
No. 1 Option: Devin White (Linebacker, LSU)
Most of the pre-draft chatter surrounding the New York Giants has centered around the “what if”, as well as the quarterback position. Don’t bet on Quinnen Williams, Josh Allen or Nick Bosa being available at No. 6.
And if the New York Giants keep their No. 6 pick, and don’t draft as quarterback, then what?
We certainly like the skill-set that Rashan Gary possesses, but we can’t ignore his lack of production either. With the No. 6 overall selection, he’d be a mild risk, although one that certainly can be justified, due to his versatility and athletic ability.
That leads us to LSU linebacker Devin White, who checks all the boxes, except perhaps the position he plays – linebacker. It simply hasn’t been a focal point of the franchise, like it once was. White would be an immediate injection of speed into a slow-footed New York Giants defense, and that’s a good thing.
According to NFL.com, White ran his forty-yard dash in 4.42 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine, and that’s incredibly fast. At 6-0 tall, White doesn’t have the height that we normally see with New York Giants linebackers, but he was an extremely productive player in the SEC.
According to the official team website, White had 123 tackles in 2018, and 286 in his three-year career. He’s the Butkus Award winner and made the All SEC first-team, as well as other national first-teams (AP, Sporting News).
Maybe this is out-of-the-box thinking for Gettleman and company, but White can not only be an immediate starter on defense, he can be an impact player for Big Blue in 2019.
