No. 4: Eli Manning, Quarterback, Super Bowls XLII and XLVI

For most of Manning’s career he has been an accumulator of statistics, the benefit of having stayed healthy for 15 seasons. But, like most players who hang around long enough, there’s going to be some peaks to go along with the valleys. In Manning’s case, he’s seen fewer peaks than valleys, but his peaks were memorable ones.

Manning led the Giants on two improbable Super Bowl runs. The first was after the 2007 season. The Giants finished 10-6 under Tom Coughlin and would end up playing – and winning – three playoff games on the road. They became the first NFC Wild Card team to win the Super Bowl when they defeated the unbeaten New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, 17-14. Manning was the MVP in that game, completing 19-of 34 passes for 255 yards and 2 touchdowns. His performance was highlighted by one play, which we will outline later in this piece.

Four years later, Manning and the Giants were back in the Super Bowl against the Patriots again. Manning went 30-for-40 for 296 yards, including the perfect fourth quarter pass to Manningham and a touchdown to Victor Cruz en route to his second Super Bowl MVP award. The Giants won Super Bowl XLVI, 21-17.
