New York Giants missing major offensive firepower against Patriots
Sterling Shepard (concussion)
The Giants’ medical staff is surely getting all-too familiar with dealing with concussions, as the scary injury has plagued the team throughout this 2019 season. No one has dealt with this more than Sterling Shepard, as he has now suffered two concussions in a very short time-span. It’s alarming that team doctors and the league’s independent evaluators missed not one, but two, in-game concussions on Shepard.
I’m not a doctor, but I’m going to guess this latest one came on the play where the wide-out was hit so hard that his helmet was up to his nose. Shepard is a tough dude- as we saw in the pre-season when he fought through a broken thumb to practice– but the team would be wise to hold him out for a long period of time. The league already reportedly looked into the Giants missing the week one concussion in Dallas, and you can bet they’ll be looking into this second missed one as well.
I would expect (and hope) that the earliest we’ll potentially see Shepard back is after the week eleven bye against Chicago, as not letting two massive head blows like this heal would be malpractice. Shepard will likely be campaigning to come back earlier than that, but you’ve gotta protect people from themselves sometimes. Head injuries are a scary, and unfortunately necessary, part of life for football players.
Shep’ is still such a young guy with his whole life ahead of him, though. Hopefully him and the team will take every precaution necessary to make sure he doesn’t put himself at risk to go back out there before everything is copacetic.
