Alec Ogletree

While I would certainly file Alec Ogletree under the category of ‘I’ll believe it when I see it’ in terms of a team actually being interested in him – like I was about Nate Solder before the recent Browns trade rumor came to life- sometimes you just never know. Ogletree has been an enormous letdown during his time with the Giants, but he’s still only 28-years-old and just three years removed from his 2016 All-Pro season.

There were legitimate questions about how Ogletree would fit into James Bettcher’s style of defense when the Giants acquired him, and those question appear to have been answered – and not in a good way for Big Blue. Still, maybe there’s a team out there that runs a more new-age style defense that thinks they can get more out of the former All-Pro. In my opinion, Ogletree would be much more useful as an outside linebacker, and could actually be an asset if he’s used in a spot that emphasizes his strong suit, which is his athleticism.

On the surface, Ogletree’s 4/42M dollar contract seems much too large to absorb for any team based on his recent play. However, when you really look into the contract, only eight-million of that was paid in a signing bonus, meaning his new team could move on from him with dead cap charges of only 3.5M (in 2020) and 1.75M (in 2021). While we would be crazy to assume the Giants could get anything more than a sixth or seventh-round draft pick, I’d sign up for that return right now.

Alec Ogletree is clearly not going to be part of this team moving forward, and getting back any amount of the draft capital we lost in moving for him would be a massive success.
