New York Giants: Grading all the free agent signings
By Matt Clark
OT Cam Fleming
It’s no secret that the New York Giants need significant upgrading along their offensive line. Last season their offensive line was putrid, allowing their quarterbacks to be sacked 43 times and to be hit and pressured with regularity.
After declining the option on starting center and losing right tackle Mike Remmers in free agency, the Giants were in need of offensive line depth. On March 18th, the team announced that it had agreed to a one-year $4 million contract with former Dallas Cowboy Cam Fleming.
Fleming is a player whom the Giants coaching staff is intimately familiar with, having played the past two seasons under new offensive coordinator Jason Garrett in Dallas while he was head coach, as well as with new offensive line coach Marc Colombo who held the same role in Dallas. Additionally, Fleming played under new head coach Joe Judge during his tenure with the New England Patriots from 2014-2017.
The 27-year old Fleming was drafted in the fourth round of the 2014 draft by the New England Patriots. Like fellow new free-agent additions Blake Martinez and Levine Toilolo, Fleming played his collegiate football career at Stanford University.
Currently, Fleming is projected to battle Nick Gates for the starting right tackle position. However, if the Giants opt to add an offensive tackle in the upcoming NFL Draft, Fleming has the versatility to be a backup at nearly every position on the offensive line. That kind of versatility is critical for a line that underperformed and dealt with injuries last season.
