When getting into the later rounds of the draft, it is imperative for teams to attempt to find contributors who provide a solid upside. Often these players either represent developmental pieces that the coaching staff feels they can eventually mold into starters, or they represent situational depth pieces.

With their first pick in the seventh round of the draft, the Giants opt to get a player who represents a good linebacker in run situations, as well as a good special teams option when they select Shaquille Quarterman out of the University of Miami.

Quarterman represents an old school style linebacker. He isn’t a dynamic athlete by any account and isn’t great in coverage. What Quarterman can do is tackle. He does so in an absolutely vicious manner that is representative of the kind of hits you see from legendary players on NFL Films.

This kind of ferocious tackling is the kind of thing you look for in a late-round linebacker who you want to utilize in run situations and as a coverage guy on special teams. It’s hard to imagine new Giants head coach Joe Judge not getting excited about using a thumper like Quarterman on special teams.
