RD 7: S David Dowell

Continuing to add depth to a shallow safety position, the New York Giants go back-to-back safeties in the seventh round by selecting David Dowell out of Michigan State University. Dowell represents an option as a safety who can patrol the middle of the defensive backfield.

Like Muse, Dowell isn’t exceptionally fast or athletic, but he is big and has solid coverage skills in both man-to-man and zone defenses. He can also play nickel linebacker and box safety, so his versatility is an asset to the Giants.

Dowell has shown the ability to come up with big plays after producing eight interceptions in his three years as a starter on the Spartans defense. With strong leadership skills and a high football IQ, Dowell is the perfect seventh-round addition to a team in need of safety and special teams depth.

The addition of Muse and Dowell helps give young viable depth with positional flexibility for new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham to utilize behind Peppers and Love. While neither project as elite safeties in the NFL, the Giants don’t need them to be elite, they just need them to be able to give Peppers and Love a breather when necessary.
