After selecting three players who fill significant needs on their roster in Tristan Wirfs, Yetur Gross-Matos, and Curtis Weaver, the New York Giants opt to go for the best player available and make more of a luxury pick when selecting wide receiver Chase Claypool from the University of Notre Dame.

One of the biggest surprises at the NFL Combine, Claypool wowed all those in attendance with his combination of size and athleticism. The 6’4″ and 238-pound Claypool became the second wide receiver of at least 6’4″ and 235-pounds to run a sub-4.5-second 40-yard dash since 2003 when future Hall of Fame wideout Calvin Johnson did it.  Claypool’s official time was 4.40-seconds.

Adding Claypool gives quarterback Daniel Jones a legitimate red-zone threat who can spread the field and provides as sure of hands as any wide receiver in the draft. The former Notre Dame star presents a serious matchup issue for defensive coordinators given his size and speed.

The matchup issues are magnified for GMEN opponents given that the Giants already have a 6’3″ and 240-pound tight end in Evan Engram, who ran a 4.42 40-yard dash time a couple of years ago at the NFL Combine.

With the Claypool selection, the Giants now have offensive weapons galore for Daniel Jones with Claypool, Saquon Barkley, Sterling Shepard, Darius Slayton, Golden Tate, Kaden Smith, and Engram. It also gives new offensive coordinator Jason Garrett ridiculous options when drawing up offensive plays.
