Who should the NY Giants target in the 3rd and 4th rounds of the NFL draft?

Willie Gay Jr.: LB, Mississippi St.

Why would he be a good value for the Giants in the 3rd or 4th round? Willie Gay Jr. possesses elite athletic traits. The G-Men need an infusion of athleticism at the second level. Even if Gettleman takes Isaiah Simmons in the first round, the defense needs more players on the second level that can cover and make tackles in open space (especially on third down).

When Gay was on the field for the Bulldogs, he demonstrated his elite athleticism and tackling.  Willie Gay Jr. was the most impressive linebacker at the NFL combine not named Isaiah Simmons. Both Blake Martinez and David Mayo struggle in pass coverage, and the Giants could use someone that could sub in on third downs and make plays.

What does he excel at? Willie Gay has explosive athleticism that is rare for someone at 6 feet 2 inches and 240 pounds. His 4.46 40-yard dash time was faster than Jeff Okudah’s at the combine. The Mississippi State Bulldog jumps out on tape because of his aggressive and exciting play-style.

Gay is at his best when he’s spying the QB or working in zone coverage. His large tackle radius is a plus when stopping the run. With his speed, he could chase down the most mobile quarterbacks when blitzing.

Why the Giants might hesitate: Gay only played in five games in 2019 because of off the field issues. Character concerns (he allegedly got in a fight with the starting quarterback) combined with his lack of football IQ might scare the front office.

Personal excitement level if drafted: (7/10) Willie Gay Jr. would be a high risk/high reward type of pick. I think he is worth the risk because he could contribute right away in sub-packages if used correctly. He possesses all the physical tools that can’t be taught, and the coaching staff could teach him the rest.

Likelihood he will fall to #99 or #110: (8/10)
