Who are some sleepers the NY Giants should target late in the draft?
By David Solow
7th round target: Charlie Heck-OT, UNC
Why would he be a good value for the NY Giants in the 7th round? Offensive tackle is still a major position of need for the G-Men, and they need long term solutions at both right and left tackle. Can Charlie Heck be an answer? He is 6’8″ and able to move his feet well in pass protection. His size and athleticism will allow him to compete for a swing tackle position right away.
Heck was a three-year starter for the Tar Heels and has offensive line in his blood. Charlie’s father, Andy Heck, is a former first-round pick out of Notre Dame. Andy played twelve successful seasons in the NFL, and is now the offensive line coach for the Kansas City Chiefs.
What does he excel at? Heck has tremendous lateral mobility for a man his size. His athleticism and length can make it difficult for edge rushers. He is tremendous at getting out in space and making blocks down field.
The Tar Heel understands well how to use his hips when engaged with defenders, which may be the result of having a father that coaches offensive lineman for a living. The likelihood of Heck becoming a true technician at the position seems high.
Why the NY Giants might hesitate: Heck is not a true road grader in the run game. At UNC, he often was caught lunging at defenders in pass protection and can get top-heavy because of his height. The Giants already have some promising tackle options like Nick Gates that will need more reps.
Personal excitement level if drafted: (6/10) Picking a developmental offensive lineman late in the draft isn’t always fun, but it can be prudent. I think Heck can develop into a Nate Solder (Patriots version) type player because of his height and athleticism.
Player Comparison: Nate Solder
Likelihood he will fall to the 7th round : (4/10)
