3. OT Tristan Wirfs

Staying with the premise that the NY Giants need to find their stud offensive tackle of the future, I’ve got former Iowa tackle, Tristan Wirfs, penciled in as the team’s third-best option for the #4 overall pick. Wirfs is an athletic marvel with elite potential, and obviously it helps his stock that he played at the offensive lineman factory that is Iowa University.

Wirfs was a state champion wrestler in high school and brings that bully-like mentality with him onto the football field. The monster offensive tackle won the 2019 Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year Award, which is nothing to sneeze at. While watching his tape, you can see that the wrestling has helped him tremendously in terms of having a crazy strong core with excellent balance.

He’s got a solid punch in his hands and is a really terrific zone blocker, an ever-important trait in today’s game. Rarely was be overmatched on bull rushes, and he’s a guy that plays whistle-to-whistle.

When discussing potential top-ten draft picks, I normally side with left tackles if the prospects are close due to the fact that they protect the quarterback’s blindside. However, Wirfs actually played left tackle a handful of games and he projects to have the best chance to play left tackle in the NFL out of the top right tackle prospects.

He would be a plug-and-player starter for Big Blue on day one, instantly making the team better while bringing a mean streak to the offensive line. Wirfs’ floor appears to be pretty low, and while his ceiling isn’t crazy high, it’s hard not to see him being a long-time starter in the NFL.

He’d be a solid selection.

(Obviously, he too could likely still be had with a small trade down and that remains an intriguing option).
