RD 7 (238th): Rodney Clemons – Safety, SMU
I decided to add a developmental project to the safety corps with the selection of Rodney Clemons of SMU. Clemons is still raw having begun his football career in his senior year of high school. Clemons would end up being a four-year starter and a team captain for SMU.
He is solid in both coverage and run defense and is a solid depth piece for the Giants at safety that they can work to develop while he contributes to their special teams units. While not an elite athlete, Clemons exhibited the traits of a quick learner while at SMU.
With the selection of Clemons, the Giants get a high-character leader who still has some solid upside as he continues to learn the safety position. With Jabrill Peppers, Julian Love, J.R. Reed, and Shyheim Carter all able to play the safety position, Clemons can be brought along slowly by the Giants.
