RD 5 (159th): J.R. Reed – Safety, Georgia
J.R. Reed was a top-10 safety on nearly every draft expert draft board and was as high as top-5 in more than a few boards. Reed represents a safety with elite tackling skills with above-average speed at the safety position. Additionally, he is a safety who makes big hits on ball carriers and has great leadership skills.
Despite not being an elite athlete at the position, Reed is good enough to be at least safety depth and represents someone with some raw skills who could eventually develop into a starting safety in the National Football League.
Adding Reed to the starting safety duo of Jabrill Peppers and Julian Love gives the Giants much-needed depth and a younger upgrade over veteran Antoine Bethea, who was clearly on his last legs last season with the Giants.
After getting safety depth in the fifth round, I am still considering additional safety talent given the lack of depth that the Giants still have. However, the sixth and seventh rounds of the drafts present opportunities to find value picks and should be the best available players at that point.
