The Veteran Newcomer: Dion Lewis

Dion Lewis joined the NY Giants in free agency on a one year, $1.5 million deal in 2020. He will provide veteran leadership from a well-respected player.

Lewis was signed to be the team’s receiving back. He will be on the field primarily on third-down and in obvious passing situations.

Dion has steady hands, is elusive in the open field, excels at breaking tackles, and he is a willing and solid blocker in the backfield.

Lewis will likely be the team’s second-leading running back in snaps for 2020. He is a good weapon that has been deployed by the Patriots where he won a Super Bowl with HC Joe Judge and was a complementary option in Tennessee for Derrick Henry.

I expect Lewis to be used in a similar fashion to how the Titans used him behind Henry. Barkley is the Giants’ version of Henry and Lewis will spell Barkley snaps whenever he needs them.

Lewis will be counted on to act as a leader in the running backs’ room and be a helpful resource for new Running Backs coach, Burton Burns. Expect Lewis to make the team and have a role in the offense as a blocker and pass catcher and may be used for certain kickoff and punt return situations.
