The NY Giants are short on cap space and long on young, cheap talent. As a result, there should end up being a few veterans being released on cut-down day.

Heading into the 2020 offseason, the NY Giants had amongst the most cap space in the league at around $80M.

However, even though their books are very clean past this year, the team is now hurting for cap space after a spending spree during free agency. After signing their 2020 draft class, the team will barely have enough to even sign the proposed $5.1M tender offered to Marcus Golden.

Although there are surely ways the NY Giants can create cap space to use during the 2020 season, they may also need to part with a few veterans that are not considered to be important in the team’s 2020 – and long-term – plans.

While the players on this list being cut won’t save a ton of cash, it will get Dave Gettleman closer to the $10-$20M ’emergency fund’ he likes to go into seasons with.

Since Gettleman did such a good job of ridding the NY Giants of most of their bad contracts, there weren’t a ton of options to choose from that will save the team much cap space, but every dollar counts.

What may surprise you most about this list is it features two players that play the same position, who were thought to be locks to be on the roster just a few months ago.

This leads to my theory on who the real backup quarterback will be for the NY Giants in 2020, which may also surprise people.

Here are the top three NY Giants that could end up being cap casualties on cut-down day at the end of the preseason.
