2. QB Colt McCoy

This is where I revert back to my original assumption that most would be surprised to see the members of this list, and Colt McCoy should be the more shocking of the two quarterbacks being featured on this list

Conventional wisdom would point to why would the NY Giants cut a player they just signed this offseason and guaranteed (a small amount of) money to.

The team only stands to gain 500K in cap space by parting ways with McCoy, but circumstances changed after the time of his signing.

The main change was spurred by the Cowboys signing Andy Dalton and, in turn, putting former #2 QB Cooper Rush on the chopping block. Now that Jason Garrett is running the NY Giants offense, I’ve been predicting that Rush will end up being the #2 QB as Garrett felt confident enough in him to be the Cowboys’ primary backup for several years with little competition.

Garrett has a solid history of grooming undrafted quarterbacks (cough: Tony Romo), and if he has as much say in the offense as Joe Judge says he will expect Rush to win that job.

So while this may have more to do with the NY Giants signing another quarterback after McCoy inked his deal that the offensive coordinator believes in more than him, it still qualifies as a cap casualty as the team will save money by releasing him as they only guaranteed him $1.2M at signing.

Either way, there’s a real solid chance McCoy picked the wrong team to join at no fault of his own, as there was no way he could have known Jason Garrett’s former QB project would join the NY Giants down the line.

He also probably didn’t take into account that Big Blue appears to have landed a steal in developmental UDFA QB, Case Cookus.

Tough luck for McCoy, but this is a tough business.

Cap savings: 500K

Chance he’s cut: 50%
