In a weird turn of events, legally embattled NY Giants cornerback, DeAndre Baker, stands to be just about the only young player to benefit from this news.
If you haven’t heard by now, the NFL and NFLPA have officially agreed to cancel all preseason action in a move that’s undoubtedly troubling for the NY Giants organization. Oddly enough, the one young player that this will likely benefit from this on the Big Blue roster will be the one who deserves to the least — DeAndre Baker.
By eliminating the preseason and limiting the number of camp bodies from 90 to 80, the Deandre Baker decision clock will almost assuredly be pushed back now that there will be no preseason at all.
Even after staggering, revelations were recently released that appeared to bury the young NY Giants player’s career came out, the team will have an easier time in the PR world explaining why they’re still holding onto the cornerback as the start of preseason seemed to be a reasonable timeframe and landmark to make the tough decision about his future with the team.
The roster limit reduction helps him as well as the coaching staff will now have 1-2 fewer bodies (guessing) at the cornerback spot looking to take his spot, and that can only be looked at as a positive for DeAndre Baker.
Does this news actually help DeAndre Baker’s chances of sticking with the NY Giants?
To be short, yes.
How much does will it help his chances? Only time will tell as the season being in limbo looks to be his best angle to sticking with the 2020 NY Giants as his lawyers have done a bang-up job of helping him out so far in that regard.
It’s truly unfair to the young cornerback or two that will now miss out on training camp, and the other inexperienced cornerbacks that were going to be looking to take his spot as they won’t get the opportunity to show what they can do in a real game.
Think about a guy like third-year cornerback, Sam Beal, whose only ‘crime’ with the NY Giants has been his unavailability due to injuries. He was finally ready to have a potentially healthy camp and preseason in his third season, but that’s now out the window.
Evaluating an XFL signing and wildcard like Xavier Askrew-Henry without any preseason action? Good luck with that one, new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham.
While Joe Judge seems like a bold guy who truly does care about having the right culture, it makes his and Dave Gettleman’s decision all that much harder now, and NY Giants fans that were expecting to find out about his fate by the start of training camp (a reasonable assumption) can pretty much throw that out the window.
DeAndre Baker has gotta be just about the only NFL player hoping there is no 2020 season, and with today’s news he’s gotten one step closer to that wish.
