What is Markus Golden’s future with the NY Giants now?

Even with the NY Giants throwing Markus Golden a small bone in the form of a possible $1M in the form of incentives, I find it hard to believe he’ll return to Big Blue in 2021 as he has to feel a bit scorned.

Imagine if you signed on with a company for one year while knowing it was way below your true worth and then went out and performed at a very high level, making that company a bunch of money (like Golden provided the Giants with a bunch of sacks); you’d expect to be compensated when negotiation time came.

That didn’t happen, but maybe Golden won’t take it personally when he realizes it wasn’t just the NY Giants that weren’t willing to give him a fair contract but rather the whole league.

In fact, it appears as though Big Blue was willing to give him the largest contract out of any team, although it’s possible he had a bigger offer on the table early on in free agency when more teams still had money and turned it down.

Either way, throwing in $1M in incentives can’t hurt in terms of making Markus Golden just a bit happier. And for the NY Giants, it’s a can’t lose scenario as if he hits those incentives it confirms that this contract was an absolute steal.

Hopefully, Markus Golden takes on the leadership role with this young defense in 2020 even though he doesn’t have a future with the NY Giants past this year, officially.

Numerous times last year he displayed moments of leadership and just how hard he plays should be enough for him to be a role model to the younger players.

Golden is as high-character a player as you could hope to have, so maybe if he gets off to another hot start Dave Gettleman decides to lock him up during the season?

I feel Golden would still be willing to sign a below-market deal even under that scenario due to just how cold his market was this offseason.

Despite that being an unlikely scenario, it may be one of the only ways the NY Giants are able to retain him past 2020.

All we can hope for is he balls out again in 2020 and that by the 2021 offseason that bitter taste that was the 2020 offseason has left his mouth.
