Case Cookus is not the first young QB to be cut in favor of Alex Tanney

I was even more mad -justifiably so, being that he was a fourth-round pick – when QB Kyle Lauletta was dumped at the end of an amazing 2019 preseason run heading into his second season than I am about a UDFA being cut, but again, it still signifies that this team is willing to keep players around for mentorship.

When you really think about it, how could Daniel Jones not take Tanney’s presence as a slight?

How many other young QB’s do you see attached at the hip to veteran QB’s that have to be around to ‘mentor’ them; and, if they are in that situation, I can guarantee you that vet QB has accomplished a ton more than Alex Tanney, who has thrown just 15 passes in nine seasons.

The Eagles were all too eager to jump on Kyle Lauletta via waivers, and had they not made the stunning pick to invest in a quarterback in Jalen Hurts in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft – in a move that shocked the NFL world – he would have been had a legit shot at being the Eagles’ primary backup.

Even though he wasn’t a Dave Gettleman pick, Davis Webb bit the dust in favor of Alex Tanney, as well. If you’re keeping track, the NY Giants wasted a third-rounder and a fourth-rounder in back-to-back years, only to cut them for a QB that offers them absolutely nothing in terms of actually playing football.

Not exactly terrific asset management during a rebuild, and I’ve been kind to Dave Gettleman on his asset spending this offseason.

Webb was picked right up by the Jets and spent the entire 2018 season on the active roster, only to head over to the Bills last offseason.

I’m not sitting here telling you that Kyle Lauletta, Davis Webb, or Case Cookus are going to turn out to be star quarterbacks in this league.

But, they could have easily have turned out to be solid backups and weren’t even given a chance to properly do so.

Kyle Laulettta was a 2018 fourth-round draft pick, only to go out and throw for 463 yards, 4 TD’s and 0 INT’s in his second preseason – including a dramatic game-winning touchdown throw in the preseason finale as time expired – only to be cut in the coming days.

What else did he have to do to earn his spot as a mid-round pick heading into his second season?

It’s rumored that Tanney was a big-time favorite of Pat Shurmur and Mike Shula, so maybe since they’re gone Tanney will finally get the ax he so rightfully deserves come official cut-down day.

The NY Giants would incur no dead cap hit by releasing Tanney and if we were to lose Cooper Rush in this process as well I would be very unhappy.

It’s unclear whether the team will go with three or four QB’s in 2020, but if it is four (and there’s a good chance it will be), Tanney may already have the roster made, which is bad news as all 53-55 roster spots are uber-important.

Next. Giants following Cowboys' offensive rebuilding approach. dark

Maybe the team didn’t like what they saw out of Cookus in the limited time they got to spend with him (less than a week, so doubtful) and are planning on scouring the waiver wire for another young or UDFA QB to fill their developmental/practice squad role, but it sure seemed like Case Cookus was perfect for that role in 2020.

But for now, Alex Tanney (somehow) lives to see another day.
