David Sills V has had an unconventional path to the National Football League.

Sills initially gained notoriety as a quarterback, when he was offered a scholarship to play football at the University of Southern California at just 13 years of age. After a hand injury prevented him from gaining interest as a quarterback, Sills would go on to play wide receiver at West Virginia. He would transfer to junior college to attempt to play quarterback before returning to the Mountaineers as a wide receiver.

The permanent conversion to the wide receiver position would be an excellent move for Sills, as he would record 125 receptions for 1,966 yards and 33 touchdowns in two years with West Virginia. Despite tallying 18 receiving touchdowns in 2018, he would not be drafted in the 2019 NFL Draft and would be signed by the Buffalo Bills following the draft.

He was signed in September of 2019 by the NY Giants and was placed on the active roster in December, where he would finish the year out with the Big Blue. Sills would not record a catch or any stats last season despite being placed on the active roster.

At 6’3″ and 211-pounds, Sills represents another potential red-zone option for the NY Giants. He doesn’t have elite speed and isn’t considered an exceptional athlete. However, he is an intelligent route runner who finds holes in coverage and has the ability to outjump the competition and come down with the ball.

In the first scrimmage for the GMEN, Daniel Jones connected on a number of passes to Sills, including one over the top where he beat free-agent cornerback acquisition James Bradberry for a touchdown.

Following the scrimmage, Jones stated that David Sills V is “a guy you can trust” as a receiver.

It will be interesting to see if Sills continues to develop a rapport with Jones. With the season-ending injury to Cody Core this week and the fact that Sills is receiving a decent number of looks with the starting quarterback, there remains a good chance that he could make the final roster.
