The NY Giants received awful injury news on stud rookie safety Xavier McKinney on Wednesday, but the franchise wasted no time with surgery in hopes of getting him back ASAP.

Listen, there aren’t too many positives to draw from 2020 #36 overall pick, Xavier McKinney, going down with the always tricky fractured foot injury. McKinney came into the year with huge expectations after somehow falling into the NY Giants’ lap in round two and by all accounts, he was living up to them early on in camp.

I’ve been criticized pretty heavily online (I’m a big boy, don’t worry, I can take it…) for categorizing McKinney’s injury as “career-threatening”, and NY Giants fans don’t have to look all that far back to examine what the same exact injury did to Hakeem Nick’s once electric career.

Few amongst Giants Nation have been as high on McKinney and his prospects right out of the gate than me since we were lucky enough to land him in the draft, but there is just no denying that fracturing a foot is right up there with the handful of worst injuries a player can suffer from.

The good news is that the franchise wasted absolutely no time in getting McKinney under the knife immediately, as it seems the team has a goal of bringing him back for Week 13, one week after the team’s Week 12 bye.

According to Dr. Jesse Morse Via Twitter, that timeline should work out for McKinney barring any setbacks.

Should the NY Giants rush Xavier McKinney back if the season is lost?

This is a pretty loaded question, but in short, yes, I think it’s going to be crucial to get McKinney any snaps we can get him down the stretch of the season regardless of what the NY Giants’ record is.

In fact, even if the season spirals out of control, it makes even more sense to get any rough spots out of the way, and to have the rookie get into some sort of game shape to the year isn’t a total loss.

The bye falling under Week 12 couldn’t be a better scenario when it comes to a potential McKinney return as that would give him more than three full months to recover which is usually the worst-case scenario when it comes to this injury.

Now, it goes without saying in my mind that if there is any type of setback – no matter how small – that the brass would have to reconsider and shut him down for the season.

Xavier McKinney is going to have a lot to add to this franchise for years to come and there’s no reason to rush him back unless he’s got a totally clean bill of health.

In a perfect world, Julian Love will hold down the fort and gain valuable experience while being a stabilizing force until McKinney gets back, and then, new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham can run those three-safety sets he’s been fawning over and used during his time in Miami.
