NY Giants: Wayne Gallman making strong offseason run at roster spot
After being left in the last coaching regime’s doghouse, runningback Wayne Gallman is making a strong case to make the 2020 NY Giants.
For some reason, Wayne Gallman never quite meshed with former NY Giants head coach Pat Shurmur. It’s worth noting that both Shurmur and GM Dave Gettleman were not here when former GM Jerry Reese drafted Gallman in 2017, but still, the former coach’s handling of Gallman’s playing time down the stretch last year was baffling to say the least.
After Saquon Barkley went down with an ankle injury in Week 3 Wayne Gallman became the most popular waiver wire add in fantasy football by a mile, signifying how the rest of the league and its fans felt about his future prospects.
Gallman delivered right out of the gates in Week 4 in a blowout win against Washington where he compiled two touchdowns, but the former Clemson Tiger went down with a concussion the next week against the Vikings and only tallied two more carries the entire season; in fact, he didn’t even dress past Week 10.
It almost seemed like Shurmur was taking it out on Gallman for being injured. Despite the failed coach being fired this offseason, the runningbacks chances still didn’t look that great to make the 2020 NY Giants, as the team signed veteran Dion Lewis and brought in promising young UDFA Javon Leake.
Wayne Gallman dominates NY Giants “blue and white” scrimmage
It was clear heading into this offseason that Wayne Gallman was going to have to put together a solid training camp if he wanted to earn the #3 runningback role for the 2020 NY Giants.
This offseason pandemic setup heavily favors veterans like Gallman who already have some familiarity with the team and don’t necessarily need preseason games to showcase themselves, and Gallman showed out at the team’s under the lights scrimmage this past Friday night.
Head coach Joe Judge described this scrimmage like it was going to have the seriousness of a third preseason game in a normal year. Gallman took advantage of his opportunities to say the least, as the fourth-year pro scored two touchdowns, including a 43-yarder on the ground.
After the game, the NY Giants released Javon Leake, making it more even more likely that Gallman sticks around for this season. Leake figured to be his main competition, although Big Blue did bring in another UDFA to take Leake’s place, it’ll be tough for Tavien Feaster to distinguish himself in one week’s time.
It looks like Wayne Gallman will get to finish out his NY Giants rookie contract after all as he remains one of the last Jerry Reese draft picks standing.
