The NY Giants have to cut down their roster size from 80 to 53 on Saturday; here are 5 players in danger of not making the cut.
Well, we have officially made it through the unknown waters better known as the 2020 NFL training camp, and the NY Giants survived without having any major COVID-19 outbreaks.
They were not so lucky on the injury front as promising rookie safety Xavier McKinney went down with a serious foot injury, but other than that, Big Blue made it through the summer without any other serious injuries.
With the media not allowed to report on the specifics of what happened day in and day out at training camp, its been hard to get a gauge on who stepped up and who didn’t play well throughout the abbreviated offseason.
We did get a glimpse of the NY Giants’ talent in their intrasquad scrimmages where a couple of players really showed out, including veteran runningback Wayne Gallman who was once thought to be on the roster bubble but through his play in that game likely secured a 53-man roster spot.
The lack of any preseason games is a major disadvantage to the younger players looking to crack the 53-man roster as they’ve had only a month worth of practice to show what they can do. As a result, veterans that have been around the league – some with the NY Giants – are going to have a big advantage when it comes to making the team in this scenario.
The injuries to Xavier McKinney and David Mayo put the team at a disadvantage because the NY Giants will have to include them on their initial 53-man roster before they can put them on injured reserve with the potential to return later in the season, meaning Dave Gettleman and Joe Judge will likely have to put a player or two on the waiver wire that they otherwise wouldn’t have.
Luckily, the NFL has expanded practice squads from 10 players to 16 this season, including the new facet of allowing 6 veteran players to be able to be on the practice squad despite how long they’ve been playing in the league (before a player only had so much practice squad eligibility).
Nevertheless, there have been some intense battles throughout training camp and even though the roster limit was lowered to 80, that means 27 players will be cut on Saturday. The NY Giants will undoubtedly look to slide 16 of those players on the practice squad, although you can bet other teams will come poaching on some of the more talented players that don’t make the final cut.
In turn, Dave Gettleman has been known to love to scour the waiver wire at the end of the preseason, so it’s fair to assume that the NY Giants practice squad will feature many new players that weren’t around during this training camp.
Without any further ado, here are five noteworthy NY Giants that are in danger of being roster cuts on Saturday.
