2. DL Austin Johnson

Signed as a free agent earlier in the offseason, Austin Johnson was always facing an uphill battle to make the 2020 NY Giants as the defensive line is the strongest position group on the entire team. Still, Dave Gettleman brought him on for 1 year/$1.5M with 800K guaranteed which raised some eyebrows at the time.

Johnson figures to be in direct competition with 2018 fifth-round draft pick RJ McIntosh, and I, for one, would hate to see Big Blue give up on the promising young lineman from Miami for a veteran who has racked up just 2.5 sacks, 4 tackles-for-loss, and 5 QB hits in four seasons over 58 games.

Austin Johnson was a second-round draft pick back in 2016 so there is no denying he has talent, but he has yet to put it all together and his skillset seems very repetitive to what the NY Giants already have along the defensive line.

McIntosh would leave the team with less of a dead cap hit, but he also is under contract for just 750K and 920K over the next two seasons, making him a serious bargain. He’s shown glimpses of legit pass-rush ability in the little action he’s received, so it’d be a shame to see Big Blue give up on him so early in his career.

I think he makes the cut over Johnson.
