NY Giants report card: Grades for every player on the active roster
Wide receivers
Darius Slayton
Slayton is the Giants’ leading receiver, and most explosive deep threat. However, even with 38 catches for 584 yards, and three touchdowns, there are spells where Slayton seems to disapper. Slayton only has one game with over 100 receiving yards and his three touchdowns came with two in Week 1 and 1 against Washington in Week 6. He is obviously Jones’ favorite target, but he’s only caught 33 of 57 targets this season. Until Slayton can prove to be consistently reliable, it’s going to prove difficult to consider him a true No. 1 receiver. Grade: B
Sterling Shepard
Injuries are once again a factor for Shepard, who missed four games due to turf toe. But, when Shepard has been on the field, he’s been among the Giants’ most productive receivers, catching 34 passes for 295 yards and a touchdown. It’s easy to see that Jones clearly trusts Shepard, and his versatility to line up in the slot or outside has allowed offensive coordinator Jason Garrett some creative license in recent weeks in terms of opening up some trick plays. Grade: B-
Golden Tate
Maybe the most disappointing player on the roster. Tate’s frustrations boiled over when he screamed “throw me the ball” into the ESPN cameras after catching a touchdown against the Buccaneers, testing the limits of Judge’s team-first philosophy. Judge benched Tate against Washington, leaving the veteran receiver behind for the trip, but the offense didn’t skip much of a beat. Tate has only caught 24 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns but it’s fair to wonder if after the bye week he’ll remain the No. 3 receiver. Grade: D+
Austin Mack
A promising rookie free agent out of Ohio State, Mack exploded onto the scene against Washington and offered a glimpse into what his role might develop into down the stretch this season and into 2021. Mack is averaging 13.7 yards per reception, while impressing teammates and the coaching staff alike. There’s a chance Mack pushes for the slot receiver job over the second half. Grade: B+
