Linebackers

ILB Blake Martinez

The Giants were hoping they were getting an upgrade over Alec Ogletree when they signed Blake Martinez back in March, but Martinez might be the franchise’s best linebacker in over a decade. With outstanding instincts for the football, Martinez has made more than his share of big plays, while leading the Giants with 92 total tackles, adding two sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and one interception. The sixth-highest graded linebacker in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus, Martinez has been the perfect infusion of talent and leadership the Giants’ defense desperately needed this year. Grade: A+

OLB Kyler Fackrell

At times, Fackrell has been among the Giants’ most impactful front-seven players, and a non-factor at others. Since returning an interception for a touchdown and breaking up a pass against the Dallas Cowboys back in Week 5, Fackrell has just 13 tackles and one sack in the past four games. Fackrell signed a one year contract with the Giants, and might need to step up over the final six weeks to earn a new deal. Grade: B-

ILB David Mayo

Mayo missed the first five weeks with a torn meniscus and has essentially been a rotational player since his return. Grade: C-

ILB Devante Downs

Downs played the bulk of the snaps while Mayo was sidelined, and was reasonably productive, producing seven run stops in 81 run-defense snaps but was a bit of a liability in coverage. Downs made a couple of disruptive plays as a pass rusher, particularly in the first meeting against the Eagles. Grade: C

LB Tae Crowder

The final player chosen in April’s NFL Draft, Crowder has been anything but irrelevant as a rookie. Crowder’s fumble recovery returned for a touchdown against the Washington Football Team sealed the Giants’ first victory. Grade B

LB Cam Brown

Brown has only played sparingly on defense as a rookie, bu the sixth-round pick has been a consistent standout on special teams. Grade B-

LB Carter Coughlin

Carter has only played 11 total snaps this year, but he’s produced a sack and two hurries in eight pass rush snaps. He’s the type of player who should be seeing significantly more playing time down the stretch. Grade: B+
