NY Giants’ Daniel Jones to get first-team reps, Joe Judge sets decision timeline
The NY Giants plan to give quarterback Daniel Jones first-team reps Friday to determine whether he’s able to play vs. the Browns Sunday
Friday is make-or-break time for NY Giants quarterback Daniel Jones when it comes to whether he will start Sunday night against the Cleveland Browns, and he’ll get a chance to make his case to play during the final practice of the week.
“He’ll get his share [of first-team reps],” Judge said prior to Friday’s practice.
Judge says that the goal remains to ensure Jones is mobile enough to protect himself in the pocket, and the last chance prior to a walkthrough Saturday for him to clear that benchmark is Friday afternoon’s workout at MetLife Stadium.
Jones, it was revealed earlier this week, suffered a sprained left ankle in last Sunday’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Complicating matters for the Giants’ quarterback situation is the fact that the team wasn’t able to practice on Thursday after offensive coordinator Jason Garrett tested positive for COVID-19.
Two weeks ago, NY Giants head coach Joe Judge held out on making a decision on Jones’ availability until he went through pre-game warmups prior to the team’s clash with the Seattle Seahawks after initially listing him doubtful on Friday’s final injury report. Last week, the Giants cleared Jones to play on Saturday.
So, what’s the timeline for a decision this time around?
“In a perfect world, I’d like to have a decision today,” Judge said. “I can’t 100 percent say that’s the case, but I’m leaning towards making a decision to day if possible.”
It will be interesting to see if Judge clears Jones to play, and if he is able to be any more mobile than he was last Sunday when he was sacked eight times, fumbled three times, and did not attempt a rush for the first time in his career.
