NY Giants Offensive Week 16 Snap Counts

The Giants’ individual snap counts can give some clues and honest insight on what the coaching staff thinks of certain players and what their value is to the organization.

As a whole, the Giants offense only got 59 snaps on the field total. That is below the NFL league average in the mid-’60s, something the offense must keep improving into next season. The defense was on the field for 66 snaps, somewhat settling in in the second half as the offense became more competent in the game.

On offense, Kevin Zeitler, Nick Gates, and Andrew Thomas took 100% of the offensive snaps. At right tackle and left guard, there was much shuffling all game.

Shane Lemieux started and played 54 of 64 snaps for 84% of the total offensive reps. Lemieux had a poor game, particularly in pass protection, but was only replaced by Will Hernandez for 10 total snaps for the third year 2018 2nd Round pick. Hernandez’s usage and snap decrease ever since his COVID-19 diagnosis has been a very puzzling storyline the last few weeks as Lemieux has consistently started to struggle in several games.

Cam Fleming started at right tackle and played 47 snaps before being pulled for Matt Peart. That went terribly, as Peart had a disastrous series in the 4th quarter with three sacks on three consecutive plays in the 4th quarter. Peart took 17 snaps total on offense, good for 27% of the team’s snaps. Week 16 was a disappointing step back for Peart, the team’s promising rookie 3rd rounder.

At receiver, Shepard led the way as usual taking 95% of the snaps while Darius Slayton took 86% of the offense’s snaps. In Golden Tate’s absence, Austin Mack started the game only to drop a costly wide-open third-down pass that was dropped right through his hands. Mack saw 20 total snaps in the game. After that drop, his snaps decreased and Dante Pettis saw some run in his first game activated with NY. Pettis saw 29 snaps, outpacing Mack, and he caught 2 passes for 33 yards in his Giants debut.

At tight end, Evan Engram saw 50 snaps while Kaden Smith got 26 snaps of his own as well. Levine Toilolo saw 9 snaps.

Wayne Gallman only saw 32 snaps (50%) of the team’s snaps. His usage should increase this week with a heavy emphasis on establishing the run game early vs Dallas. Dion Lewis took 24 snaps compared to Morris’ 8 snaps. The two backups offered little help to Gallman’s primary duties and they will need to elevate their play in Week 17.
