NY Giants: Evaluating their First Half Struggles
In conclusion, a lot must change to fix the NY Giants’ first half performances.
They have shot themselves in the foot numerous times the last three weeks and have nobody but themselves to blame for the position they have put themself in.
The team has a grand total of nine points over the last three first halves. You can’t expect to win or compete in today’s offense-crazed NFL where teams score 20 or more points nearly every game. The Giants offense has fully become broken the last three weeks. It must be fixed immediately or the team has no shot at competing with Dallas this Sunday.
They must look at what went right in Dallas in Week 5. They started off the game hot, scoring a touchdown on their opening drive, and then immediately followed suit with a timely pick-six from Kyler Fackrell. The Giants led 14-3 after the game’s three opening drives which is as ideal a start as any team can ask for.
New York has gotten punched in the mouth three straight weeks with little chance of coming back with their porous offense. The team was much more competitive in the first five weeks and eight weeks when they sat at 0-5 and 1-7. In the last three weeks, all three games were essentially over in the first half as the Giants’ hampered offense has shown no life or signs of making any improvements.
This offensive group clearly isn’t very talented, but even the Jets have outscored and beat the high-flying Browns and Rams in back-to-back games. It’s inexcusable for any NFL team to score consistently under 20 points. Teams seemingly gain easy yards and make big plays happen almost by accident it seems. When the Giants try to get cute, smart, or creative with their own offense, it ends in disaster or disappointment due to the execution or lack of execution in key moments and on trick plays.
The team hasn’t been able to execute on 2nd, 3rd, or 4th down as of late. They need to get into favorable 2nd and mediums and more 3rd and shorts to keep the offense on schedule. Look at how comfortable and easy it was for all three opposing quarterbacks the last three weeks to pick apart the Giants’ defense and destroy their heavy zone scheme.
The Giants’ offense is broken and they must rediscover their identity immediately for a potential Week 17 NFC East championship vs Dallas.
