What might a deal look like?

The Giants could go two ways here … Keep building around Jones and hoping that increasing the talent at the skill positions in free agency and the NFL Draft accelerate his development, or take jumper cables to a stagnant offense with an elite 25-year-old quarterback with Hall of Fame upside.

One NFC personnel executive isn’t sold trading for Watson is the right move.

“If it gets out that the Giants even tried to pull off a trade, it will kill the relationship with Jones,” the executive said. “I still firmly believe Daniel Jones has the chance to be a legit quarterback with an elite running back alongside him.

“Sometimes its best to stay in your lane. Somebody will blow the Texans out of the water.”

As outlined above, the Giants have every reason to be that team.

Here are two possible trades:

Giants give:

QB Daniel Jones

TE Evan Engram

2021 first-round pick

2022 first-round pick

2023 first-round pick

Giants get:

QB Deshaun Watson

Conditional 2023 second-round pick

Trading Engram with a post-June 1 designation would clear $6.013 million in cap space in 2021, which would allow the Giants some flexibility to go shopping for a playmaker or help on defense in free agency.

Trading three first-round picks would leave a mark, but if Watson elevates the Giants as he has the chance to, those picks could come in the bottom half of the first-round.

Giants give:

QB Daniel Jones

2021 first-round pick

2022 first-round pick

2023 first-round pick

Giants get:

QB Deshaun Watson

Keeping Engram would give the Giants one more weapon, and a motivated Engram catching passes might bring out the best in the first-time Pro Bowler.

Regardless of draft capital lost in a trade, Watson dramatically alters and imrproves the Giants’ prospects in 2021 and beyond, which is certain, and the same certainty can not be applied to the players those picks might become.
