The NY Giants did due diligence on the premier quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft class, sending an area scout to watch Trevor Lawrence throw during Clemson’s Pro Day workout, a team source tells GMenHQ.
Multiple reports say that dozens of teams were in attendance to watch Lawrence throw, despite the fact that the Clemson All-American is all but assuredly going No. 1 overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Lawrence, 6-foot-6 and 220 pounds is viewed by many as a generational quarterback prospect.
In three seasons at Clemson, including a national championship campaign in 2018, Lawrence completed 66.6 percent of his passes for 10,098 yards with 90 touchdowns and 17 interceptions, while becoming a three-time All-ACC selection.
It is virtually impossible that Lawrence will fall to the Giants with the No. 11 overall pick, or that the organization would have the ammunition to move up, which likely explains only having an area scout in South Carolina for Lawrence’s showcase.
However, it is common practice for teams to send scouts or members of the front office and coaching staff to Pro Days throughout the leadup to the NFL Draft both to find further clarity for the team’s draft board as well as gather intelligence for the event in future seasons should a player become available via trade or in free agency.
The Giants will likely use 2021 as an opportunity to fully evaluate whether Daniel Jones can emerge as a premier franchise quarterback.
