Kawika Mitchell, 2007

The Giants’ signed Kawika Mitchell away from the Kansas City Chiefs before the 2007 NFL season. He picked a good time to join the team – his one season with the Giants ended up being one of the best season’s in the franchise’s history.

Mitchell became a key contributor to the vaunted 2007 defense – starting all 16 games for defensive coordinator, Steve Spagnuolo. Mitchell had a great season playing alongside Giants’ legends like Michael Strahan, Justin Tuck and Antonio Pierce – registering 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, an interception and two touchdowns.

The Giants’ needed all hands on deck on their way to the franchise’s third Super Bowl victory, and Mitchell gave it his all. In the Super Bowl against the undefeated New England Patriots, Mitchell was all over the field – ending up with 8 tackles and a sack.

He was signed to little fanfare, but he played a big role in a Super Bowl winning season. As far as one-and-done seasons go, Mitchell’s went as good as it can go – he’s the only one to win a Super Bowl with the Giants.

After his one year playing his home games at Giants Stadium, Mitchell was a sought after free agent. He chose to stay in New York – but with the Buffalo Bills, cashing in by way of signing a five year, $17.5 million deal.

While Mitchell would end up retiring before the contract ended, his year with the Giants was unforgettable. It brought the Giants a Super Bowl, and brought Mitchell and ring along with his big free agent contract – a win-win for both parties.
