NY Giants find their veteran backup QB, adding Mike Glennon
The NY Giants have agreed to terms with veteran quarterback Mike Glennon, league sources confirmed to GMenHQ Thursday.
Glennon, 31, will likely be the front-runner to serve as Daniel Jones’ backup this season, after spending last year with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he made five starts. In 2020, Glennon completed 62 percent of his passes for 1,072 yards with seven touchdowns to five interceptions, as the Jaguars lost all five of his appearances.
The NY Giants are certainly hoping for better results, in the event that he’s forced into action this season.
A career 61.1 passer, Glennon has 6,235 career passing yards with 43 touchdowns and 25 interceptions.
Glennon is an interesting scheme fit, given the NY Giants’ offense was most effective on designed runs last season, but according to Pro Football Focus, Glennon only had four designed runs last season for the Jaguars.
Upgrading the backup quarterback position was a priority for the NY Giants this offseason, following Colt McCoy’s inconsistent showing last season.
Presumably, Glennon replaces McCoy, who spent one season with the NY Giants as Jones’ backup in 2020, making a pair of starts after Jones suffered ankle and hamstring injuries.
Adding Glennon brings a veteran presence with starting experience to the NY Giants’ quarterback room, where he’ll both have the chance to help mentor Jones but also step in at a moment’s notice if called upon.
