3 remaining NFL free agents NY Giants should pursue
No. 1: OT Alejandro Villanueva
Villanueva is as reliable as they come at offensive tackle, and given that Nate Solder hasn’t played in over a year — and had the worst season of his career the last time he took the field — and Matt Peart remaining a work in progress, could push for the NY Giants’ starting right tackle job.
Last season, Villanueva played in 1,098 snaps for the Pittsburgh Steelers, fifth-most among all offensive tackles and was as steady as they come in pass protection.
According to Pro Football Focus, Villanueva allowed only three sacks and 13 quarterback hits. PFF also gave Villanueva a 77.1 pass-blocking grade, and 74.6 overall mark.
Some talent evaluators are down on Villanueva because he had bad film last season, but he’s likely affordable at this stage of free agency and would provide a steady veteran presence along an offensive line that remains a work in progress. At minimum, Villanueva could push Solder for a starting job, and might even be an upgrade opposite Andrew Thomas.
