NFL Draft: NY Giants still eyeing playmakers after signing Kenny Golladay
The biggest winner of the NY Giants offseason thus far has been quarterback Daniel Jones, but even after signing top free agent wide receiver Kenny Golladay, Jones’ supporting cast might be about to get even stronger.
It is obvious that general manager Dave Gettleman and the NY Giants set out this offseason to bolster Jones’ supporting cast and add some game-altering weapons to the vertical passing game, by signing Golladay, John Ross, and tight end Kyle Rudolph.
But, even those marquee veteran additions haven’t taken Gettleman and the NY Giants out of the market for an additional playmaker with the No. 11 overall pick in next weekend’s NFL Draft.
“You’re always looking to upgrade every position,” Gettleman said during a conference call with reporters Thursday. “[It] doesn’t make a difference. Whether it’s wide receiver, tackle, whatever. You’re always looking to upgrade.”
It’s easy to see why the NY Giants have already dumped significant resources into wide receiver, and could be about to invest another premium asset at the position. After all, Darius Slayton produced a team-high 751 receiving yards in 2020 and Sterling Shepard was the only other player to catch three touchdowns.
So, it would seem the best remaining of Alabama’s Devonta Smith or Jaylen Waddle could be in play for the NY Giants in the first-round.
As GMenHQ previously reported, there is a feeling among NFL scouts across the league that Gettleman is “enamored” by Smith, who averaged 15.9 yards per reception and caught 23 touchdowns, en route to winning the Heisman Trophy last fall.
For Gettleman, the film on Smith, Waddle, or even LSU’s Ja’Marr Chase will play a vital role in deciding if they are a fit for the Giants.
Matt Lombardo is the site expert for GMenHQ, and writes"“It’s about value and how you’re building your team,” Gettleman explained. “What you’re looking to do. You can never have too many good players at one position. And, you know, you evaluate the film and the college film suggests that they’re very good players. There are plenty of smaller guys that have been very successful in this league just like there are plenty of huge guys that have been successful and everyone in the middle.”"
