Could NY Giants GM Dave Gettleman shock the world and pull off a blockbuster to acquire Aaron Rodgers?

With speculation rampant that Aaron Rodgers has thrown his last pass for the Green Bay Packers, general manager Dave Gettleman Monday didn’t rule out the NY Giants exploring a trade for the reigning NFL MVP.

“You explore everything,” Gettleman said during an appearance on WFAN. “But, at the end of the day, we believe in Daniel [Jones], and we keep moving. I don’t want to talk hypotheticals.”

Gettleman’s comments were a stark departure from his answer during a post-draft conference call with reporters Thursday, when the veteran executive brushed off any suggestion that the NY Giants had any interest in acquiring Rodgers.

“No, it’s none of my business,” Gettleman said, when asked if he would ever call the Packers after Rodgers pressured them to trade him.

It is obvious that the NY Giants are committed to Daniel Jones, and have certainly gone the extra mile to build around him in 2021, adding wide receiver Kenny Golladay via free agency and investing a first-round pick in the NFL Draft into former Florida wide receiver Kenny Golladay.

However, if the NY Giants are going to compete for the postseason, Jones must make a significant leap from what he’s shown in the past two seasons, especially coming off an 11-touchdown and 10 interception 2020 campaign.

If Gettleman and the NY Giants are serious about competing for Super Bowls, trading for Rodgers must be given serious consideration.

The NY Giants on offense, now, have a roster that is capable of making a deep playoff run; with a healthy Saquon Barkley, Golladay, Toney, Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton along with a defense that got significantly deeper and more talented the past two offseasons.

From Rodgers’ perspective, the talent at the NY Giants’ skill positions would rival anything he’s had at his disposal in Green Bay in a division that might be an easier path to the playoffs given that the Bears just chose Justin Fields in hopes of solving their quarterback woes.

The price would likely be steep, perhaps as many as three first-round picks, to pry Rodgers away from the Packers, but the NY Giants now have two selections in the first-round of the 2022 NFL Draft — after acquiring Chicago’s first-rounder in a Thursday trade — so it certainly isn’t prohibitive to Gettleman picking up the phone and making a serious offer.

Gettleman stepped out of character over the weekend, earning the moniker “Trader Dave” from the NY Giants’ front office and rivals, and the biggest trade of all is one that the NY Giants must at least consider.
