The doomsday scenario for the Giants comes to fruition if Daniel Jones isn’t who they think he is. Luckily, the addition of the Bears’ 2022 first round pick gives them a solid back-up plan.

If Jones falters again in 2021, the Giants will be forced to move on from their signal caller – much like the NY Jets did with Sam Darnold this year. There are no more excuses for Jones – an aggressive offseason by the team’s front office has given him more than enough to be an above average quarterback in the league.

It doesn’t have to be a Josh Allen style leap into MVP consideration, but there needs to be a leap nonetheless. If Jones is turning over the ball at an alarming clip and missing open receivers again in 2021, the winds of change will be blowing.

Sam Howell, the quarterback of the North Carolina Tar Heels, is one of the most intriguing prospects in the draft. He’s been a star for Mack Brown’s squad throughout their rejuvenation as a program – throwing 68 touchdowns over 25 games the past two seasons.

His accuracy and leadership qualities have many comparing him to Baker Mayfield – the man who’s helped return the Cleveland Browns to prominence. ESPN’s Todd McShay offered him high praise, saying Howell possessed great energy, strength, sturdiness and a sneaky-good ability at running the football.

Aside from Howell, the Giants could turn to other quarterback prospects like Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler, Cincinnati’s Desmond Ridder or Liberty’s Malik Willis. While the Giants are hoping Jones is their guy, but at least they have plenty of options while looking for a possible replacement.

The Giants’ doomsday scenario of Jones’ being a bust upgraded from end of the world to slight setback – all thanks to gaining the Bears’ 2022 first round pick. That, in itself, is a win.
