NY Giants’ roster: Jabrill Peppers still vying for Graham Gano’s No. 5
The rivalry developing for the No. 5 on the NY Giants’ roster between Jabrill Peppers and Graham Gano may be the NY Giants’ most intriguing position battle
Perhaps the most intriguing battle in East Rutherford isn’t for playing time or a roster spot – but a number coveted by two of the NY Giants’ best.
Since it was announced that the NFL was doing away with the rule that certain position groups could only wear certain numbers, Jabrill Peppers has been itching to get his favorite number back. While turning heads at Paramus Catholic High School (NJ) and the University of Michigan, Peppers put himself on the map in his famed No. 5.
Unfortunately for Peppers, the number is also near and dear to the heart of the team’s current No. 5 – Graham Gano.
The kicker wore the number for his tremendous comeback season with the Giants in 2020 – a year where he made 31 of his 32 field-goal attempts.
Originally, Gano stated ‘everything is negotiable’ when Peppers came knocking – but the two seem far apart on the compensation. While a price may have been set, Peppers stated that Gano’s price was ‘way too high’.
It’s been a trend for players to switch their numbers to single digits this off-season – Jalen Ramsey, Julio Jones and Sterling Shepard all opt-ing to switch it up. Peppers won’t be joining them unless the kicker switches his stance.
Fans have been pressing the kicker on Twitter to let the number go, but he’s been steadfast. As much as people want to see Peppers rocking the #5 while making plays for the team’s defense, nobody can blame Gano for wanting to keep the number that worked for him.
It looks like the number will stay with the Giants’ leading scorer in 2020 – Gano tweeted out ‘Go get that 5 Gano jersey tho’ in response to a fan’s plea. Barring a godfather offer from Peppers, it looks like the two won’t be switching things up.
