NY Giants roster: 5 players who will be gone before 2021 NFL season begins
NY Giants’ potential training camp cut #2: Kelvin Benjamin, WR
The fact that Kelvin Benjamin is a current member of the Giants is a strange one in and of itself. He hasn’t played since 2018, and he has been lining up as a TE in camp after spending his five-year career at WR.
Benjamin was always a long-shot to make the final cut due to the lack of an established role in the offense. As great as versatility is, not having an established role could be equally as harmful. When head coach Joe Judge was asked about Benjamin’s role:
"“In terms of Benjamin working a different position [Friday], we’re going to work different guys at a variety of things right now,” Giants coach Joe Judge said. “He’s a big guy. He’s always been a big receiver. He’ll work receiver. He’s working a little bit flex tight end as well. “I wouldn’t really kind of, you know, pin him down to any one position at this point. We’re going to use the weekend to move him around to different spots and see how it works out.”"
Don’t expect this comeback story to last much longer.
NY Giants’ potential training camp cut #3: Gary Brightwell, RB
A comeback story we do expect to last is that of Corey Clement’s. The Super Bowl-winning RB that spent all four of his professional seasons in Philadelphia also impressed during the same rookie camp tryouts that Benjamin earned his contract.
Assuming Clement makes the roster, the expected backfield cut would be rookie Gary Brightwell, a sixth-round 2021 draft addition out of Arizona. Brightwell is not much of a receiving threat, and he never excelled while playing for a Wildcats team that went 16-26 during his time there.
