Tight End #3: Kaden Smith

Smith is firmly in place as the Giants’ third tight end. Smith heads into year three with the Giants, looking to finally break through and create a steady and consistent role for himself in this newly-crowded offense.

Smith is a 2019 6th round pick of the 49ers. He was cut during the season and latched onto the Giants’ roster. In three of his last six games in 2019, Smith put up six catches for 70 yards, six catches for 35 yards, and two touchdowns (including the game-winner in OT), and he ended the season with career-highs in catches and yards with eight catches for 98 yards.

Smith looks like a prototypical tight end.

He is not the fastest cat in the world, but he can run and challenge opposing linebackers. He’s not the strongest player in the league, but he’s shown an ability to win in traffic and come down with contested catches. He’s not the most gifted blocker, but he’ll always stick his nose into any player, get physical, and use his leverage to drive his defender backward.

Smith is one of the more underutilized players on the Giants’ roster. He can be a viable asset in both the run game as a blocker and as a catcher in the passing game. Smith won’t be on the field every snap, but he should have a solid niche role in “12” and “13” personnel situations.
