3 NY Giants position battles that will shape training camp, 2021 season
Slot wide receiver
The NY Giants identified the biggest flaw of the offense, and went all in on bolstering the talent at wide receiver, in hopes of facilitating quarterback Daniel Jones taking a major leap in Year 3 of his NFL career.
Kenny Golladay arrives as the prize of free agency at the position and arguably the most significant free agent acquisition of Gettleman’s tenure, so too, does former first-round pick and speedster John Ross, along with first-round pick Kadarius Toney.
Toney has all kinds of versatility and explosiveness that will help him see the field almost immediately as a rookie.
So, with Golladay established as the NY Giants’ No. 1 receiver, it will be fascinating to see how the slot position develops this summer.
In theory, Sterling Shepard will return to the slot, where he’s been most effective throughout his career. However, if the NY Giants keep Shepard on the outside, look for Toney and Ross to compete for reps as the No. 3 receiver.
Similarly to cornerback, the wide receiver position is as talented as it has been for the NY Giants in at least half a decade, which will make for intense training camp competition and the organization hopes improved output from the position in 2021 and beyond.
