Three undrafted free agents could make a strong push for the NY Giants during training camp next month
As soon as the final pick of the NFL draft is in, teams and general managers turn to prospects that were not drafted, and that is no different for the NY Giants and general manager Dave Gettleman.
These prospects are called undrafted free agents. Last year, the NYG signed Niko Lalos out of Dartmouth, who wound up getting an interception and recovering a fumble in six games as a rookie.
Gettleman added three UDFA’s: Florida center Brett Heggie, UCLA/Baylor offensive lineman Jake Burton, and Georgia Southern defensive end Raymond Johnson III. These players can make a push for a spot on the practice squad or if they’re really good, the final roster.
Here’s a look at how each of the NY Giants’ undrafted free agents could make an impact during training camp and beyond this season
Florida center Brett Heggie
Although Heggie won’t be the NY Giants’ starting center, since that job belongs to Nick Gates, he has a nice shot at becoming the backup.
His quickness off the snap and success in short-yardage allowed the Gators to play him at center and guard. The Giants did not select any offensive lineman in the draft, so Heggie is definitely an eye to keep on at training camp this summer.
